Howrah is my hometown

Howrah is my city; it is district town of same name district. It is the smallest district among 18 districts of west Bengal. Howrah city is twin city of Kolkata, now Howrah considered within greater Kolkata (Kolkata metropolitan).  Yet Howrah is the city of 500 years old, when Kolkata just 323 years old. According to history when Job charnock (administrator of British east India Company)came to Bengal in 1690, he choose uluberia (a place of Howrah district on the bank of Ganges river) for established their business house. But it was not possible for obstruction, came from local people. Then he went to Kolkata another side of river Bhagirathi (river Ganges), which was the foundation of Kolkata city. Howrah is the second largest city of west Bengal. The name itself is possibly derived from a village named Harirah which was located in or about the site of modern day Howrah City. Howrah municipality started their administration from 1862.

In Howrah city’s locality like shibpur, salkia, ramkrishnapur, B-garden, chatterjehat, santragachi, ramrajatala, jagacha, dasnagar, belgachia, betor, baksara, belur, ghusuri, liluh, malipanchghara, bantra, kadamtala etc. We live at chatterjeehat area. My ancestors lived in east Bengal. 1947, at time of independence of India. Bengal divided in two parts; east Bengal became the part of Pakistan. From escape from communal riot near about 5 million refugees came to west Bengal. Then my ancestors also settle down in here. We are the third generation of this unfortunate people who uprooted from their old home. Anyway, Howrah is my town, I born and grows up here.

I love my city very much. It is an old city, narrow road, clumsy market place, traffic problems, but stills I like this city for life. This city once called coolie town. But a city of industries, many small, mediocre, big industries once fulfills this city. But now many of them just remain like ruined history. It is a city of culture, sports and educations. Bengal engineering and Science University is second oldest engineering college of India. Belur math, the head quarter of Ramakrishna Mission, established by Swami Vivekananda. Botanical garden of India (here you can see great banyan tree), Howrah station-largest railway station of eastern India situated in this city. Veteran writers, Poets, actors of theater, film actors-actresses, historians, musicians, players born in this city.

This is my howrah, my beloved city. I like her with all odds. I wander this city from one side to another. I like her smell, test, scene, sound, touch, smile, cry, prestige, honour, insult, fear, craziness, shouting, whispering, order, request all. Water logged city, mud ways, scorching sun flooded road, dim lighted road, foggy park all are my favorite. Her rendezvous n music, festivals n puja, and recitation n theater- I admire. Often this city is generous, often ferocious; love others and scold. I love her, hate her; respect her, criticized her. But above all I say-in any position, any situation, and any circumstances its’ mine.

  1. I liked your simplicity of thought and passionate feelings for your city. I also hail from Howrah, received education and grew up in Ramkrishnapur.
Although I live in kolkata now, I frequently visit Howrah.
